Welcome to Leverage Climbing Studio! I’m Ryan, a personal trainer and rock climber. I started Leverage Climbing studio because I believe climbing is for everybody – and every body.
I’ve been climbing for over two decades, but guess what? Like most people, I don’t have a body that was custom built for rock climbing.
I have relatively short arms for my height, which means I’ve had to spend years learning how to not just adapt but to use this “limitation” to improve my performance.
You don’t have to be an elite athlete to climb. The way to improve and climb injury-free is to work with (aka leverage) the attributes you already have – and potentially find a way to use them to your advantage.
I don’t have a record of truly elite ascents, but I have completed climbs that seemed quite literally impossible to me at one time.
And these accomplishments became possible because I took the long view and continued to show up for training.
I can help you do the same.
You don’t have to have a perfect, optimized life to be a skilled climber, either.
I understand that life is busy, and you don’t have countless hours to spend in the gym!
I have a family, have had a 50+ hour per week job, and have had to take time away for health reasons.
My years of relative consistency have contributed to my successes more than any perfectly designed, 8-week cycle of intensive training – and I can help you create that kind of (imperfect) consistency in your life, too.
Leverage Climbing Studio Core Values
CURIOSITY: I’M INQUISITIVE AND ENJOY THE PROCESS OF LEARNING AND DISCOVERY.
I find certitude to be off-putting, as it often prevents continued learning. From a sports science perspective, climbing is in its infancy. This is exciting to me because it means that coaches and clients who remain open-minded and curious will stay on the leading edge of a burgeoning field.
EMPATHY: MEETING YOU WHERE YOU ARE IS CRUCIAL TO FACILITATING GROWTH.
Climbing is a sport that is open to people of all backgrounds, body types, and ages. As such, I think empathy is a core requirement for a climbing coach. If I haven’t listened to the actual person in front of me about the reasons for climbing, your motivations, your hang-ups, your time constraints, etc., then I am unlikely to create a plan that will actually work for you.
CRITICAL THINKING: THE ABILITY TO SIFT THROUGH THE COLOSSAL JUMBLE OF INFORMATION AND OPINIONS ABOUT TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL — NOW MORE THAN EVER
The rapid growth of the sport in the age of social media has created an overload situation, where it’s nearly impossible for an “average” climber to separate the signal from the noise. A common complaint that I hear from climber friends and clients is that they feel a constant sense of anxiety that they are not doing enough. After all, they are endlessly barraged with new exercises and techniques that a given pro or influencer swears by. I’ll do that work for you, so you can be confident there’s a science-backed benefit behind each program.
